做模具的先決條件就是要有CAD 3D圖，但並非每一種產品款式都適合用電腦製圖，有些成品外觀比較複雜，凹凹凸凸花樣多變且不規則， 3D圖很難表現出栩栩如生，CAD劃出來的圖都過於呆滯與生硬，沒有活潑生動的氣息，這一個時候就必須藉由經驗豐富的手工雕刻老師傅，一刀一刀將它刻出來，師傅還必須懂得模具脫膜技巧，刻出來的木模才能正確使用在金屬模具上。
